TOMB OF ŞEHİD OSMAN

Turkiye BAYBURT 13th Century

Özellikler

Of the two tombs on the Şehid Osman Hill in the west of the city, this is the southern one. It has a cylindrical body built on one course of protruding stone foundation and a conical roof.
The portal facing west and framed within a pointed arch is ornamented with a hood of four rows of muqarnas. The mihrab on the qibla wall of the inner space is a semi-circular niche with five rows of muqarnas framed in a vertical rectangle.
The inscription above the portal is now illegible. Although the sources claim that in 1054, Osman Ghazi, the brother of Menguch Ghazi, commander of Saltuqid armies, fell martyr during the raids to the city and he was buried on this hill; yet, it is still disputable that the present tomb is his. On the other hand, the plan and form of the structure may date the building to the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century.
